A chart that appears all at once has been revealed, not animated.
- 01The claim is written before the chart is built, and the chart form is chosen to serve the claim rather than to display the data.
- 02One variable enters at a time, so the viewer reads the axis before they read the bars.
- 03Scales stay honest: no truncated axis, and no figure inflated by the size of the shape carrying it.
- 04Source and date sit on screen with the number, because an unsourced figure in a video is worth nothing.
Data motion goes wrong when the animation is decoration laid over a finished chart. Sequenced properly the animation is the explanation, axis, then baseline, then the series carrying the surprise, so the viewer arrives at the conclusion in the order the argument needs. It also exposes weak data fast: a claim that needs everything on screen at once is usually a claim that does not survive being read slowly.
