Commentary fails in one of two ways, and both are edit decisions. The speaker gets ahead of the visual, so the viewer is asked to take a claim on trust; or the visual gets ahead of the speaker, so the point lands before it has been set up. Fixing the order is most of the craft, and it is why a commentary edit takes as long as it does despite looking like two tracks and a face.
