Frequency separation, dodge and burn, and skin that still has pores in it.

Retouching removes distractions. It does not remove the person.
- 01The image is split: texture on the high-frequency layer, tone and colour on the low, so blemishes and shadows get fixed without touching each other.
- 02Contouring is dodge and burn at low opacity on the low-frequency layer — never a blur, which eats the skin.
- 03Every change sits on its own layer at its own opacity, so a client asking for "less" is a slider rather than a redo.
- 04Delivered layered. A flattened file is a file that cannot be revised.
The recognisable failure of cheap retouching is plastic skin, and it comes from one thing: fixing tone and texture with the same tool. Separating them is slower and it is the entire difference, you can lift the shadow under an eye and keep every pore. A high-end beauty retouch runs 30 to 90 minutes an image for that reason, and anybody quoting it in minutes is running a filter.
